We were sent this TV commercial for the Washington Lottery. It's a feel good spot, directed and scored nicely. And we totally embrace the humanitarian message it promotes. It's definitely a nice change from the standard over-the-top, frivolous spending message that lottery commercials often regurgitate. We could easily see other brands "sponsoring" this kind of call to action.
We hate to pick apart such a valiant effort but a few thoughts came to mind soon after the warm and fuzzies.
For one, it's such an awesome idea. Why hasn't a hang glider pilot done this before. Perhaps they have and the creative team simply made it into a commercial. In any case, it's not like you need to win the lottery to go hang gliding with a chicken. More importantly, you don't need to win a bundle of cash to start making a difference in someone or something's life. In fact, you don't need a dime.
Yes, we know. "Duh!" But as much as we like these spots, there's something slightly off with using legalized gambling to promote doing good when the money people spend on lottery tickets could go directly to those in need.
Fly that one up the flagpole. And remember to take a bird with you.
In the meantime, what other feel good ideas do you think the ad agency came up with for this campaign? Who knows, perhaps your answer will lead to others actually going out and doing them.
