We've often wondered why someone didn't come up with a more creative use of unused bus bench and billboard media space. Instead of leaving them blank with a phone number or something as uncreative as "Space for Rent", we thought local artists and designers should be allowed to jazz them up a bit.
A few months ago, we drove by a Hollywood billboard promoting what we thought was an art exhibition. It took us several more weeks, however, in slower traffic, to notice that there was something green about the billboards themselves.
Eco-LogicalART.org. Smells green to us. But how many people are going to take the time to do the research?
Even though tens of thousands of people see these hidden gems sprinkled around L.A. every day, we doubt few of them notice any more than the imagery. If they take the time to dig a little deeper, they'd discover that this public art initiative is the brainchild of Peter Schulberg, a gallery owner that specializes in recycled art.
Featuring original art painted on discarded billboard vinyl, Schulberg's OFF THE WALL art events turns disposable advertising into valuable art. We likey. We only wish more people who caught a glimpse knew that, too. Perhaps the URL becomes the focus of the art. Or, maybe, by including artists that incorporate relevant text would help build awareness without having to over-explain the billboards with additional text that compromises the art.
Nevertheless, we applaud Schulberg's initiative and any other innovators out there that wish to create a similar program in their city.
