Recently we were in Abilene, Texas where we had the fortune opportunity to visit the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature (pronounced "the nickel").
It was a small gallery and book store dedicated to the art of children's books. The art was good and inspiring and in Abilene of all places. Why? Because the mayor at the time was curious to know why a children's book had so many mentions of Abilene.
Perhaps the most profound thing the ex-major said in his presentation was the fact that the author had told them that art in children's books were important because they were the first art that a child every sees. This stuck with us.
We're not parents but we know that children are impressionable. We were gonna say that this could apply to design and fashion as well, but we all know that our parents had bad taste when we were growing up, and it may be the reason we actually rebelled. After all, we're not wearing gold jewelry or hanging owl murals made from yarn over our fireplace.
We love The Nickel and support them 100%, but perhaps the argument should be that we need to uninspire our children to the point where they want to create something better. Maybe, the worse things get, the better things get. Of course, that's just us. We like beer.
What do you think inspires kids?
