Less is More. Why Single Serving Packaging Sucks.

At the risk of sounding like Jerry Seinfeld, what's up with single serving condiment packets? Does anyone out there use only one per sitting or does someone need to figure out a better system?

Fast food and take-out joints aren't the only culprits. We ordered a turkey sandwich at a hotel the other day and were presented with 3 single serving bottles. Even worse.

Of course, single serving packaging doesn't stop there. There are travel-sized toiletries, bite-sized snacks, and everything in-between. Pizza delivery chains are also getting on the bandwagon promoting four smaller pizzas in four smaller boxes that add up to more cardboard than single large box.

While there are certainly exceptions to the rule, smaller isn't always better when it comes to packaging and the impact it has on the environment.

If it makes more sense, and our gut tells us it does, we say buy big and refill smaller eco-friendly containers. When you can, buy bulk and bring your own reusable packaging. And if you can think of something better, do that. Invent a better mousetrap package. Or maybe rethink one that already exists. After all, maybe those enormous polygamist family-sized packages you can find at Costco's and Sam's aren't so ridiculous after all. That is, as long as you can get through 12 months of mayonnaise before it goes bad or the toxic packaging doesn't cause us serious problems first.

We admit that we don't have all the answers, but perhaps some of you do and would like to share them below.
