Overdubbing boring footage with funny commentary is nothing new. Not excluding virtually every Japanese martial arts movie or viral videos like those made from GI Joe cartoons, TV shows like Mystery Science Theater 3000, MXC and Bonzai all make great use of otherwise useless content.
That said, when we were sent this video of two Chicago comedians having a laugh with Claussen's pickle snap test, we were inspired with a few ideas of our own.
We'd love to start seeing people making videos translating the corporate green washing that is polluting our commercial airspace, as well as those commercials by brands who are leading everyone to believe that nothing is wrong with what they are selling. God knows there are tons of green TV shows and PSAs that could use some help, too. Bor-ring.
For example, we recently saw a commercial for cheap drapes with one woman asking the question, "How does she make these so inexpensive?" Well, we have our thoughts, but does everyone else really know the environmental effects of super low prices? We think two comedians could have a field day with translating this unwatchable nonsense.
Adbusters has created similar campaigns using subversive billboards and mock-print ads where they replace images or text with their own harsh realities, but we feel like this could be done in a much more humorous, inviting way. In other words, we don't need to be made to feel any more guilty than we already are, but we could all certainly use a little bit more comic relief.
What commercials or TV shows would you like to see translated into viral goodness?
